How to be creative
There are many definitions and paths the being creative. Is it something you are born with or can it be learned are the most important questions.
In my opinion the answer is Yes to both. Have you ever seen a child that is not creative? Their ability to take anything however simple and then create a new world from a splash of paint or sticking together a couple of cardboard boxes is amazing. So what happens as we grow older? Where does this fear of failure and the need to perfectionism creep in?
I’m watching the transformation in my 9 year old daughter now. Slowly I can hear her language change from believing that anything is possible to I must get that right and does it fit into societies rules of what is right and what is wrong. However hard I try my words contradict those taught at school.
I can only imagine the battles going on in her head.
Why are schools as adamant to take this beautiful and abundant magical skill away from our future generations? Leaving behind a nations struggling to think beyond its normal boundaries.
I’m not going to let that happen, at home there are no rules, nothing is impossible and most important of all – there is no failure – just an opportunity to learn.
Take a risk, live with no fear in your heart as
anything is possible if you believe it can.
The 3 Traits of Great Creatives
Massimo Vignelli
I love this quote from Massimo Vignelli. For me it sums everything up about living a creative life.
Train yourself to have vision, courage, and determination. These three things, to me, are very important. You have to work with people who have that, and at the same time, you have to have it, so that you can install it on people. You can excite them. You can show them you have a vision. You can show to them what they cannot see. At the same time, you should not have a fear of failure—this is what marketing is all about: fear of failure. Instead, you have to have courage. Courage not to fail, or courage, even, to fail! On top of it, you need to have determination to reach your objectives. Vision, courage, and determination will bring you where you want to go, but without them, it would be a miserable life.
